CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of at least 113 active cannabinoids identified in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are powerful compounds that interact with the endocannabinoid system in our bodies.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a valuable biological system for maintaining human health and function. Essentially it helps to keep the body in balance. The ECS is a whole network of receptors connect from your brain throughout the body, including the immune system, the pain signaling system, and the musculoskeletal system. Cannabinoids activate the receptors along the system to alter neurotransmitter releases in the brain, and as such, can influence bodily functions such as appetite, pain, memory, mood and anxiety. The body does create its own cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids to help support this regulatory system, but CBD supplements help to keep the receptors working at their best. It is similar to how we use vitamin C to boost our immune system – CBD acts as a kick starter to help the functions of the body’s central regulatory system.

No. CBD products contain zero or trace amounts of the other main cannabinoid that can be found in cannabis, namely THC – this is the compound in Cannabis that leads to the psychoactive effects that are commonly associated with marijuana and can get you high. CBD products made from Industrial Hemp which legally has to have less than 0.02% THC and will therefore not have this effect.

No. Hemp Seed oil comes from cold pressing the seed of the industrial hemp plant. This is a fantastically healthy oil full of Omega 3 and 6 but it does not contain any significant amounts of CBD.

The body can absorb CBD via different delivery systems. We outline the main ones below:

  • Tinctures: A tincture is the most common form of delivery for CBD products.  It is easy to administer: a drop of oil under the tongue as per the recommendations of the manufacturer. It enters your bloodstream through the sublingual artery. Tinctures are highly concentrated, so only a few drops are necessary to feel the effects.
  • Capsules: For people used to a regular routine of taking supplements in a capsule form, these offer an advantage of no taste and smell and all one needs do is swallow with some water.
  • Topicals: Topical products are applied directly to one’s skin which absorbs the CBD.
  • Edibles: Taken orally, the CBD is absorbed via digestion – breaking down nutrients and circulate them around your body.
