A result of nerve damage often associated with diseases like MS and Diabetes, neuropathic pain is a type of chronic pain that can lead to long-term problems if left untreated. The sharp shooting pains and burning sensation experienced by those suffering from neuropathic pain can be severe and debilitating, which is why opiods are often prescribed. This class of drugs may offer quick relief, but they come with the risk of side-effects and long-term dependency. The alternative – non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) – also come with a long list of side-effects and are considered, in many cases, to be ineffective. Fortunately CBD is showing promise as a natural treatment that boasts a strong analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect.

Pain is often a symptom of inflammation and with neuropathic pain in particular, which is linked to inflammatory diseases like arthritis, reducing inflammation in the body is an important part of any treatment plan. CBD helps to do this by working with our endocannabinoid system, a cell-signalling system that regulates everything from mood and appetite to immune function. By activating the CB2 receptors, found in the immune system, CBD helps to reduce inflammation and in turn suppress pain. CBD also keeps inflammation in check by acting on the cytokine molecules, boosting levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines and reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Equally important, CBD helps to elevate the production of natural cannabinoids in the body, which boosts its anti-inflammatory response.

While research is limited, there are a few studies in both human and animal models that point to CBD’s potent anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. In one study* of rats, researchers applied a CBD gel to the arthritic knee joints of the rodents and after four consecutive days, they observed reduced swelling in the affected area as well as an improvement in pain scores. Similarly in a 2006 study**, a group of researchers looked at the effects of cannabis-based medication (CBM) for the treatment of pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The 58 participants were split into two groups, with one group being given CBM and the other a placebo. Those taking CBM experienced less pain when moving than those in the placebo group.

While reducing inflammation and improving our pain response are key to tackling neuropathic pain, another important aspect of managing any type of chronic pain is relieving the associated symptoms, namely anxiety and insomnia. CBD is able to address these concerns and many more, which is why it’s considered a magic elixir. By promoting relaxation and helping to calm the mind, CBD can alleviate stress and reduce anxiety. In doing this, it’s also able to aid sleep, which so often eludes people suffering from persistent pain.

Unlike allopathic medications, CBD can be taken regularly for long periods with very little risk. You can also choose from a number of different products – CBD oils, tinctures, edibles or even a vape. The way you administer it is perhaps less important than the dose you choose. Start low and increase the dose slowly to determine how much you need to effectively manage your pain.
