Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD) is a chronic condition characterised by attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.
It is a condition that is usually experienced from a very young age and can significantly affect the learning and social capacities of children, as well as their overall growth and development.
That is why recently many parents have started turning to CBD to assist in treating some of the ADHD symptoms experienced by their kids.
So what are some of the ways that CBD works to assist in the treatment of these conditions, and what are the benefits of using CBD as opposed to pharmaceutical medication?
How It Works
CBD interacts with a system in the body called the endocannabinoids system (ECS). This is a network of receptors that work to communicate with the brain, sending signals as to where there is imbalance in the body’s various systems and processes.
There are two cannabinoid receptors in the body that make up this system, referred to as CB1 and CB2 receptors, and each has a different function. CB1 receptors are located primarily in the brain, while CB2 receptors are normally found in the immune system and internal organs.
When CBD is taken, it stimulates activity in the endocannabinoid system and triggers the body to utilise more of the cannabinoids that are already being naturally produced.
In doing so, it can help to restore balance in different areas and in various ways – leading to benefits like decreased anxiety and stress, pain relief and – as is most relevant to ADHD – improved focus and reduced hyperactivity.
What The Research Says
Naturally, a greater sense of focus together with reduced stress and distraction are ideal benefits for those suffering from attention disorders.
However, at this stage research into the relationship between CBD and ADHD is still limited.
A 2013 study focused on cannabis use in people suffering from ADHD and other subtypes of the disorder. Over 2 800 adult participants were involved in the study, and reports indicated that, on the whole, they were more likely to experience hyperactive-impulsive symptoms when they were not using cannabis to self-medicate.
This gave some indication that those who used cannabis to treat their conditions found them to be effective in treating hyperactivity and impulsivity.
Another trial in 2017 found that the cannabinoid medication Sativex showed a reduction in ADHD symptoms in a group of adults suffering from the condition.
In addition, a 2020 study found that higher doses of medical cannabis were associated with reduced use of ADHD medication in adults, with cannabis products containing a higher percentage of CBD were associated with lower ADHD scores.
Advantages Over Pharmaceutical Treatment
What is more is that in these studies, CBD treatment resulted in none of the other impairments or side effects experienced by those using pharmaceutical ADHD treatments.
Traditional medications can cause sleep issues, decreased appetite and mood swings – all of which CBD naturally works to improve rather than illicit in those who consume it.
This is why our Junior oil can be a great supplement or alternative to pharmaceutical medication that kids are often prescribed by doctors for the treatment of ADHD. Utilising a CBD Isolate, it contains no THC (the compound associated with the “high” of cannabis) and is therefore completely safe and legal for children.
However, we absolutely recommend that parents consult with their trusted doctor before administering CBD to their children for this purpose, and do not advocate that CBD be substituted for any existing medication without the advice and treatment plan of a medical professional.
